Hospitality as a Mission Strategy
The context to which Peter calls the recipients of his letter to practice hospitality and servanthood is astonishing and underpins the fact that followers of Jesus are to live out the message of Jesus in both word and deed regardless of the temporal circumstance. If you have read 1 Peter you may recall that these people were facing intense persecution at the hands of the Roman government. They were heavily taxed and discriminated against due to their beliefs. They were probably regularly robbed and had their houses plundered. They would leave for work, a short trip, or down to the market place never to return. At the height of persecution Christians were fed to lions, burned, decapitated, and crucified. Yet in the midst of all of this the apostle calls the people of God to radically love and serve one another to the end that they would display the power of the gospel to those who do not know God. He gives them to underlining motivations for this in verses 7 and 11…
