There are some events in the history of nations and among a particular people that either galvanize the people together to see their cause advanced or so demoralize a group to the point that their movement become a distant memory. For example:

The death of Alexander the Great brought a a swift end to the empire that was Greece, but the death of ordinary men during the Revolutionary War produce a new nation. The slaughtering of young Americans in the bombing of Pearl Harbor led to unity among people for the cause of freedom all over the world, but the bombing of Hiroshima led to surrender of the Japanese Empire. The death of Hitler brought an end to the Fascist Nazi regime that boasted that they would rule for a thousands years, but the death of Martin Luther King ignited a non-violent movement that led to the end of racial segregation in America and brought hope to those suffered under apartheid in South Africa.

The same it true when we come to the event of the resurrection in relation to the Christian faith . But there is one monumental difference, namely what was a stake! The resurrection of Jesus from the dead was an event that secured more than simply a temporal freedom from social injustice or military oppression. But rather what we celebrated in the death and resurrection of Jesus is the reversal of the curse of sin and death, the reconciliation of sinful humanity to the Holy Creator God, and the breaking in of kingdom of God that will culminate with the return of Christ and the renewal of the creation. That is why we celebrate Easter because in resurrection we see the greatest victory ever won by the greatest hero that ever lived...Jesus! In the resurrection we see the greatest defeat that has ever been recored over the greatest enemies that has ever walked the earth...Satan, sin, and death. Join as we remember the Gospel Story that was "Foretold".
